College kicks off defense of cup

Kalgoorlie College Football Club’s bid to defend the Metropolitan Cup will kick-off in blockbuster fashion when they take on the Perth Royals FC on Saturday 5th April.

Following a superb season in last year’s competition, College progressed through to the final in which they dominated play before eventually securing the cup with a 4-1 victory over Quinns FC.

Evergreen veteran player Andrew Reilly returns for a second stint as coach this year and is excited about leading a new group of players to defend their title.

“This is my second stint as coach of the team so I am excited about the prospect of winning back-to-back Metropolitan Cup,” Reilly said.

“We had a great run last year and this year I am confident we can win the cup again.

We have lost a few players but we have recruited a few new quality additions to the squad.”

As the most successful coach in College’s history, winning the GSA Premier Division Title six consecutive years from 2007-2012, few would bet against Reilly.

While the combination of recruits and senior players has Reilly believing his side can go the distance, he is also excited about what the influx of youth will add to the team.

“As well as recruiting to strengthen the squad, we have a number of younger players that will get their opportunity this year to solidify their position in the team,” he said.

“We have some exceptional talents in Tawanda Ncube, Gerald Mutedzi and Brock Reilly. I believe this competition will provide them with the means to further develop their game.”

Saturday’s game will be an especially significant and emotional game for Reilly as it will be the first time he takes the field with his son Brock, a promising young
midfielder.

Now in the twilight of his playing career, Reilly’s life-long wish of one day taking the field with his is about to be realized. It will also be a poignant moment in College
history as it will mark the start of father passing to baton to his son.

College’s opening match of the Metropolitan Cup will be played at the JA Lee Reserve in Lathlain with kick-off at 3:30pm.
