Rakic dazzles in win

Peter Rakic turned in a dazzling disply to launch Kalgoorlie College's defence of WA soccer's Metropolitan Cup in style against Perth Royals FC last weekend.

Despite being the squad's first hit-out of the season with what was a new-look combination, College dominated tyhe clash to win 11-1.

Rakic finished with five goals.

But despite the ease of the win, College coach Andrew Reilly said the local outfit were still seeking respect from some quarters in putsuit of back-to-back titles.

"we've travelled away before and some peopl make the comments, 'we don't expect you to win, but hopefully you can put up a good showing,'" Reilly said.

"But (rivals) teams know who we are now and how we play."

Also impressive was young midfielder Brock Reilly - whos scored off the last kick of the game and represents College's future - alongside Gerald Mutedzi and Tafadswa Ncube.

"It was a good result for us at this stage," Andrew Reilly said.

"We were not quite sure of what to expect of the opposition and how out team would gel, given the massive change we've had since last season.

"But Peter (Rakic) was great and his finishing deadly - a reminder of what he is capable of when he is fit and in form."

After being blitzed early, Royals trailed 5-1 to halt-time.

The home team's prospect of mounting a genuine revival were then thwarted just three minutes after the resumption when College's Elliahs Kungache scored his second goal.

"we had three debutants in the side, so it's always a concer - when youhave no match practice - to how they will pick up our game plan," Andrew Reilly said.

"Also, I was particularly impressed by how our three 15 and 16 year-olds adapted."

"They have a lot of great qualities and I belive they will only get better."

College won the title last year on the back of seven road trips, with round two of the 2014 series set down for April 21.
