Daniel Tebble scored a contender for goal of the season as the free-scoring Blues smashed eight goals past Celtic at Usher Park on Sunday in A Grade action.
Peter Rakic scored a hat-trick as yet his efforts did not even account for half of College’s tally, as Nic Duncan (2), Tebble (2) also found the net before Substitute Elliahs Kungache completed the rout with his second of the season.
This was a mesmeric display by College, in which their youngsters again showed their class, and even evergreen goalkeeper Andrew Reilly showed reflexes and agility that belied his advancing years.
College were quick out of the blocks determined to establish their clear superiority. They had already threatened to dismantle a Celtic side shorn of confidence and fifteen minutes into the game, Duncan was hacked inside the penalty area after ghosting his way past two defenders and Rakic stepped up to take the resulting penalty; smashing the ball into the top right hand corner to open the scoring.
That College did not double their lead soon after is both comical and frustrating as after some great footwork to get past several defenders Duncan conspired to blaze the ball over the cross-bar with the goal at his mercy. A combination of one-too-many touches and profligacy in front of goals were the only thing keeping Celtic into the game but any hope of staying in the game were quickly snuffed out with two quick-fire goals from Duncan and Tebble enabled College to go into half time with a comfortable 3-0 lead.
The second half went much the same way as the first with the irrepressible Brandon Kagoro and Brock Reilly bossing the midfield. College added five more goals with Rakic completing his hat-trick, Duncan adding a second and Burly striker Kungache rounding off the scoring. But a moment of magic came when Tebble scored his second of the day. Having intercepted a wayward pass just inside the Celtic half, Tebble had the presence of mid to look up and spotted the goal keeper off his line. In a repeat of his goal against Liberties FC in the Metropolitan Cup quarter finals last year, Tebble lobbed the ball from a full 50 metres over the scrambling keeper into the top left hand corner.
The scoreboard told its own story at the final whistle - College will march on to face the threat posed by East Fremantle in the Metropolitan Cup next weekend.
